Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series sounded similar to Alyson Noel’s Evermore series, and  P.C. & Kristin Cast’s House of Night series, but I decided to give it a chance in case it wasn’t generic young adult vampire fiction. The opening chapter revealed Rose and Lisa, two best friends. Rose is a Dhampir (which I remembered from Vampire Hunter D as being part-human part vampire), and Lisa is a Moroi (which is…I guess, a ‘good vampire’? It was unclear). Lisa was feeding from Rose, and it was a highly charged sexual scene. This opening scene made me wonder if this book was going to be a lesbian romance. Sadly, it wasn’t to be. That would have been different. Instead it was very bland and the only character that came close to being fleshed out, Rose, was extremely cliched. Rose is violent, snarky, and promiscuous. She starts fights but she’ll do anything to protect Lisa, who doesn’t appear to really care that much about her. Truthfully, I couldn’t even get through the whole first book. I was bored to tears. I cannot in good conscience recommend this series.
